Clinical Trial Abundance Advocacy Lead

  • Remote
    • District of Columbia, District of Columbia, United States
  • $125,000 - $175,000 per year
  • Clinical Trial Abundance

Job description

The Opportunity

1Day Sooner represents altruistic medical research participants. We have run successful advocacy campaigns in the U.S. (at both the federal and state levels), U.K., and Africa which have collectively impacted billions of dollars in spending and been covered globally in outlets such as the New York Times, CNN, the BBC, and Nature Magazine. We are looking for an Advocacy Lead to manage our in-house advocacy for our US campaigns. The Advocacy Lead owns our government relations, especially with Congress, and manages our federal advocacy strategy (including stakeholder and legislative recruitment, grassroots outreach, events, and press), meets with legislative teams and other decision-makers in DC, and coordinates the creation of advocacy materials and the answering of decision-maker questions and objections. The Advocacy Lead is 1Day’s day-to-day lead on the Hill, connecting 1Day’s policy and research teams with our lobbying firm while developing campaign strategy with our Director of Science Policy and Advocacy and our President.

Currently, 1Day’s main advocacy campaign is for “Clinical Trial Abundance", a movement that seeks to reduce the cost of health evidence and extract more value from the evidence we have. Our program seeks to both: (1) achieve incremental policy change through legislative vehicles such as the Prescription Drug User Fee Act as well as regulatory rulemaking and guidance; and (2) build a broader movement to achieve transformative change over time. Our vision  for the next ten years is to reshape the FDA of the 21st century as profoundly as the post-thalidomide era changed the FDA of the 20th. The idealized stretch goal is to, within the next ten years,  increase the amount and value of health evidence being generated by 10x at 1/10th the current average cost. In October 2026, Reps. Auchincloss and Griffith introduced the bipartisan Faster Clinical Trials Act, which carries four of our priorities into statute text: fair compensation for trial participants, public summaries of IRB decisions, continued publication of FDA complete response letters, and real-world evidence guidance. We are now building a coalition behind the bill and working toward a Senate companion and next year’s PDUFA reauthorization.

This is a Lead role with a path to Advocacy Director. Someone who shows the judgment, ownership and relationships the Director role requires can expect to be considered for promotion.

Key Information

  • Apply by filling out our application. The review of applications is underway and will continue until the position is filled.

  • Details about the role:

    • Full-time, based in the DC area. This is a remote position - 1Day has no offices - however our CTA work is DC based.

      • Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the US. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

    • The position will report to 1Day’s Director of Science Policy and Advocacy.

    • Compensation: Depending on background and experience, we expect salary for the position will fall into a range of $125,000 to $175,000

      • Highly competitive benefits package—including up to 6% 401(k) match, 15 vacation days plus federal holidays and a holiday office closure, sick and parental leave and individual coverage HRA.

      • Trial Period: Per our standard practice for external hiring, we expect the position will include an initial trial period with 1.25x the normal salary. Formal check-ins with our President after 4 and 8 weeks will help guide you on expectations regarding the trial period and what is needed to transition to permanent employment.  The 8 week check-in will likely be the point where 1Day Sooner will be in the position to make a long-term commitment. In some cases, we may need additional time beyond the 8 weeks, leading to another formal check-in at 12 and then 16 weeks. If at the 8 week check-in 1Day Sooner decides against extending an offer of permanent employment, you would still receive another two months pay at the trial level. Historically, 79% of people who started a trial period received a full-time position. About 10% chose to leave before we decided, and about 10% were not offered one.

Position Responsibilities

  • Own 1Day’s relationships with Congress and the administration for the Clinical Trial Abundance campaign. Build and maintain relationships with members, legislative staff, and officials at FDA and HHS.

  • Direct our contract lobbying firm’s priorities and work with our policy team to turn policy proposals into specific legislative asks.

  • Set up and lead meetings with legislative offices. Present our asks, anticipate the questions staff will raise, and respond with answers from our policy team and outside experts.

  • Drive our legislative campaign for the Faster Clinical Trials Act and a Senate companion: work with sponsor offices on bill text and redlines, recruit co-sponsors from both parties, and position the bill for next year’s PDUFA reauthorization.

  • Pursue other vehicles for our priorities, including appropriations report language and PDUFA riders, and track legislative calendars so our proposals are ready when a vehicle opens.

  • Write and edit advocacy materials: legislative language, letters of support, talking points, one-pagers, and responses to decision-makers’ questions and objections.

  • Plan and staff DC events, briefings, and lobby days that advance the campaign.

The Advocacy Lead will need to register as a lobbyist with the federal government and possibly state governments, depending on the specifics of our campaigns.
